Frequently Asked Questions
Below are answers to the questions people ask most often about working with me. If your question isn’t covered here, you’re welcome to call or book a free 10-minute consultation.
About Me and My Practice
What are your qualifications?
I have an MA in Counselling Psychology from the University of British Columbia. I'm a Certified Clinical Counsellor (CCC) with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, a Certified EMDR Therapist, and Approved Consultant with EMDRIA.
I’ve completed advanced therapy training in trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex PTSD, and dissociative disorders. I also have specific training in treating military members and first responders (paramedics, firefighters, police, and RCMP officers) who’ve experienced trauma and PTSD as a result of their work. Read more about my background.
How long have you been practicing?
I have been a helping professional for over 5 decades. I was a social worker and rehabilitation counselor for over 20 years. I’ve been a psychotherapist since 2005, and have specialized in treating complex PTSD and dissociative disorders since 2014 with EMDR, CBT, and somatic therapies.
Who do you work with?
As a trauma-informed therapist in Winnipeg, Manitoba, I work online with individuals, including first responders, military members and veterans, LGBT individuals, residential school survivors, refugees, and people affected by systemic racism and workplace trauma. I also provide consultation to other EMDR therapists.
What issues do you treat in therapy?
I'm a trauma-informed therapist in Winnipeg, Manitoba, offering online therapy to individuals dealing with trauma, complex trauma, PTSD, and dissociation. Clients come to me for a wide range of issues, including childhood abuse or neglect, sexual assault, intimate partner abuse, work-related trauma, accidents, or traumatic loss. I also treat depression, anxiety and panic attacks, and relationship problems.
What does "trauma-informed" mean?
Trauma-informed therapy looks at how traumatic or distressing events in your childhood or adult life may be affecting your current struggles. Responses to trauma, including anxiety, depression, anger, numbness, sleep difficulties, or problems trusting others, are understood as ways you learned to cope. In practice, this means therapy is paced carefully, you have full say in what we work on, and we build stability before working directly with painful memories.
My Therapy Approach
What kinds of therapy do you use?
I use integrated, research-based approaches suited to your needs: EMDR, somatic therapies, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).
What is EMDR, and how does it work?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy that helps the brain process traumatic or distressing memories that have been "stuck." Learn more about EMDR.
What are somatic therapies?
Somatic therapies focus on how stress and trauma are held in the body. They help you become more aware of physical sensations associated with your distress, helping your nervous system settle and process the sensory memories.
What are CBT and MBCT and how do they help?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a research-supported therapy that addresses the thought and behaviour patterns underlying trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and relationship struggles. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) combines CBT with mindfulness practices, teaching you to notice difficult thoughts and feelings without getting pulled into them.
What is EFT, and how does it help?
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) helps individuals understand the emotional needs underneath their relationship problems and recognize the cycle of conflict, so you can break the patterns.
How Therapy Works
What happens in the free consultation?
During the free 10-minute phone consultation, we'll briefly talk about what's bringing you to therapy and what you hope to change. It's also a chance for you to ask questions and get a sense of whether my approach fits your needs.
What happens in the first therapy session?
In the first session, we’ll talk about your current situation, the problems you're facing and their history, and your goals for therapy. In relationship therapy, we explore your relationship to identify patterns as areas of focus in therapy.
By the end of the first session, we'll have a beginning treatment plan.
Is what I say in therapy confidential?
Yes, with a few legal exceptions, such as a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or suspected abuse of a child.
Do I have to talk about everything that happened to me in therapy?
No. You choose what to share in our therapy sessions. You will be in control of the direction therapy sessions take, and can share the details of your life when and if you feel safe to do so.
How will I know if therapy will help my situation?
I specialize in helping people who have struggled for a long time and feel stuck. Many of my clients come to me after trying other therapy where their situation did not improve. While no therapist can guarantee results, clients who attend regularly often see meaningful improvement, even when other therapy hasn’t helped.
How long will therapy take?
The length of therapy depends on how long you’ve been struggling and your goals. Some people notice change within a relatively short time; others, especially those working through complex or repeated trauma, benefit from longer-term work.
Therapy Sessions and Appointments
Do you offer in-person sessions?
No. All sessions are held online via video on Zoom, so you can attend from home or another private space.
How long are therapy sessions, and how often do we meet?
Sessions typically last 1.5 hours and are held weekly or bi-weekly. Some clients move from weekly to bi-weekly once their symptoms have improved.
Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?
Yes. Research shows that online video therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy. This holds true for many of the approaches I use, including EMDR and CBT.
Do you see therapy clients outside of Winnipeg, Manitoba?
Yes. My services are offered online worldwide. I see people in all Canadian provinces, the USA, and other countries.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please give at least 24 hours' notice to change or cancel an appointment. Cancellations with less notice are charged the full session fee.
Fees and Insurance
How much does a therapy session cost?
I’ll go over my fees during your free, 10-minute consultation.
Is therapy covered by insurance?
Yes. My therapy services are covered by most extended health insurers.
Do you work with Workers Compensation, Veterans Affairs, or other third-party payers?
Yes. I work for third-party payers, including the Workers Compensation Board in Manitoba and BC, Veterans Affairs, and others.
